How do newborns learn?

Babies are born with a drive to learn about the world; it’s innate. As soon as they are out of the womb, they start exploring their environment, and these explorations lead to learning. Babies can’t communicate language, so everything they learn is implicit: they have to figure things out on their own.

Exploring the world around them helps babies make sense of their environment. Babies try things and then observe the results, whether they were expected or not. A sweet, warm, and cozy feeling might indicate that this is how they get their mom’s attention, so they keep doing it. A sour or uncomfortable feeling could mean that they’re being rejected, or it could be something they’re doing that they shouldn’t be doing. They try it again and observe how their parent reacts. This is how they learn.
